Dace Moore - The Interview

Dace Moore, a local Vancouver fashion designer, taught herself to sew as a young single mother. SheCourtesy of www.dace.ca started out by constructing garments from vintage patterns. She went to Blanch Macdonald in 1998 and took the fashion design program. After working in for a few local Vancouver fashion companies Dace launched her own line in 2002. She is know for clean, modern lines in her feminine designs as well as versatility in her collections. She designs and manufactures her collections here in Vancouver, B.C. I had a chance to talk to Dace about her company and ideas for the future, here is what she had to say.

SP: What inspired you to go into designing and starting your own company?

DM: I had always wanted to purchase particular styles of clothing, but was never being able to find what I was looking for. So I started creating my own styles.

SP: What was the first article of clothing you ever designed?

DM: I can't pinpoint it. But it was probably a dress, seeing as that is all I wore back in the day.

SP: How do your designs differ from other designers?

DM: I think my designs differ - perhaps because they are not necessarily trendy, but more timeless.

SP: I noticed you design and manufacture your clothing line here in Vancouver, B.C. Why did you choose to manufacture locally as opposed to sending the work overseas?

DM: I wanted it this way for many reasons… But mainly because in the beginning I loved the learning process, the creating, being a part of the whole process. And I could only be a part of it entirely if I produced locally.  I still feel the same -  so I am proud that I stuck with it and kept it all in in Canada.

SP: Where do you find inspiration for your designs?

DM: This varies from season to season. But mainly I get inspired by the people that surround me, fabrics, prints and overall - my mood.

SP: What is your favourite piece in your Fall/Winter 2011 collection?

DM: I have a few favorites but I guess it would have to be the Aurora dress.

SP: What big fashion trends do you see coming for 2012?

DM: For me, I think that sticking to classic styles that are easy to wear is a trend for any season. For 2012 in particular, I see bolder colours and prints in fabrics.

SP: Do you usually incorporate current fashion trends into your designs?

DM: I do - but most of the times it just happens without me really thinking about it.

SP: What do you find most difficult about running your own label?

DM: I love designing - but I could do without dealing without the business part of it.

SP: Where can customers purchase your designs?

DM:  Across Canada, USA and in Japan and of course online at www.dace.ca.

It was great to talk to Dace about her company and designs. Her designs are classic and affordable in price! You can check out Dace's designs at www.dace.ca
