Young Liars release Homesick Future EP
10AM
This morning I woke up, went to work and checked my email. I was asked to review Vancouver’s Young Liars premiere EP, Homesick Future. I’m writing this Monday night so I would figure that by the time you read it the record will be available for purchase from iTunes and, presumably, Netwerk.
Young Liars, according to their labels bio, are an Electro Indie Pop group. I cannot argue with that claim. I said to my girlfriend that they reminded me of the Cure. So we watched a few Cure videos and paused them and listen the Young Liars in between. Our research has proven to be inconclusive.
When I shut my eyes and listen to the first two songs I see sweaty people, dancing under the influence of a strobe light. It lends the spectacle a ‘choppy’ feeling, broken. I also am getting a strong impression that everyone is wearing heavy white make-up. It is running down their faces.
I feel that is an adequate representation of what one of their shows would be like. I have never attended one. Do not listen to me.
For me though, the best moment of the entire record is the first 28 seconds of Newton, Forgive Me. This brief moment makes me think of 2001: A Space Odyssey. It creeps me out in the same way. There is something more below the surface.
Also my girlfriend said she really liked this song.
I get the feeling like this is the kind of music that would do really well in England. I have no sound reason for saying that. It just seems apt.
All in all if you like 80’s, jangly, poppy indie rock then this is probably right up you alley.
Here's the video for Colours, make up your own mind.
